Novak Djokovic will finish year as World No.1


Novak Djokovic becomes first Serbian player to clinch Year-End No. 1 crown. Djokovic will finish this year at top as the end of this calendar year and he the first Serbian to achieve this landmark in the history of tennis since 1973.

Novak Djokovic clinched the year-end No. 1 ranking on the ATP World Tour, finishing a season in which he won 41 consecutive matches and three Grand Slam titles.

The 24-year-old Novak Djokovic secured the title as World No.2 Rafael Nadal’s loss to Florian Mayer in the third round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters. Djokovic is 64-3 this year, with 10 tournament championships including 3 Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open.

Djokovic began the season with 41 consecutive victories. He defeated Nadal, last year’s No. 1-ranked player, six times this year and Roger Federer, the top-ranked player in 2009, four times. 16 players from nine countries have won the honor since 1973. Djokovic, the only Serb, has earned $10.6 million in prize money in 2011.
Four players have managed to achieve this milestone and amongst them are the World Number 2, Rafael Nadal (2008, 2010), World Number 3, Roger Federer (2004-2007, 2009), and famous rocket serve master, Andy Roddick (2003).

Novak Djokovic will be officially crowned the year-end World Number 1 at the closing ceremony of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. The ceremony will take place in London and Djokovic will feature in this tournament for the fifth consecutive time. The tournament is scheduled to be played from November 20-27.
