Samantha Stosur defeats Serena Williams to lift US open 2011


The Australian ninth seed, Samantha Stosur, clinched her first grand slam title at the US Open 2011 by overcoming the challenge of Serena Williams in two straight sets of 6-2 6-3. Serena Williams is the favorite to lift the trophy but the Australian player has turned the heat on to American star and finished clinical victory.

Playing as an underdog in the Championship final, Samantha Stosur claimed the first grand slam of her tennis career by beating Serena Williams in straight sets to win the 2011 US Open. Stosur made a strong start to the match and secured a double break in the third and seventh games to seal the first set with 6-2. However, point penalty in the very first game of the second set cost Williams, She went to abuse Chair Umpire calling her serve as pre-mature grunt to a forehand winner as inappropriate. 

The three time US Open Champion was serving to stay in the championship match at 3-5, Serena faltered once again despite saving a couple of match points and as Stosur hit her 20th winner as she became the 40th player in the open era to win a Grand Slam event. The final scoreline read 6-2, 6-3 

Stosur is the first Australian winner at US Open ever since Margaret Court won in 1973. , Stosur collected the winner's check of US$ 1.8 million and an assured place at No.7 in the WTA rankings when they are released on Monday. Stosur thanked her fans across the globe, particularly back home in Australia for their fabulous support.
