ICC Awards 2011: Jonathan Trott named as Cricketer of the year

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Awards ceremony was held in London, England on Monday. The period includes the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the ICC Intercontinental Cup final, several bilateral Test and ODI’s and several ICC Leagues.  Players’ performance is taken into the consideration from the period of 11 August 2010 to August 2011.

Jonathan Trott, the England batsman, has been named as the Cricketer of the Year for 2011. Sir Garfield Sobers presented the trophy to Trott at the annual ceremony in London. Jonathan Trott has fantastic year of 2011 he is among the runs both in ODI’s and Tests as well. In 12 Tests Trott scored 1042 runs at an average of 65.12 with 4 centuries and 3 half-centuries. Coming to ODI’s he played 24 ODIs, scoring 1064 runs at an average of 48.36 with 2 centuries and 9 half-centuries. 

Jonathan Trott said that it is fantastic to be part of a successful team and h never envisaged winning this award, but it is a brilliant feeling to be recognized. Trott was chosen for the award ahead of Cook, last-year's winner Sachin Tendulkar and South Africa batsman Hashim Amla. However, his teammate and England ODI skipper Alastair Cook won the Test player of the year.

The England opening batsmen Cook played 12 Tests and scored 1302 runs at an average of 76.58, with 6 100’s and 4 50’s. His 235 not out against Australia in Brisbane has been the most prolific start to Ashes series as England completed first Ashes victory away from home since 1986-87. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka former skipper Kumar Sangakkara has won two awards as he was named the ODI Cricketer of the Year and also picked up the LG People's Choice Award. Sangakkara scored 1049 runs at an average of 55.21 in 25 ODIs. He also led the Sri Lankan attack in the finals of World Cup 2011. 

Team has skipped the ICC Awards ceremony in London, MS Dhoni has won the Spirit of Cricket award. West Indies leg spinner Devendra Bishoo was named as Emerging Player of the year. Ryan ten Doeschate, the Netherlands all-rounder, was named the ICC Associate and Affiliate Player of the Year. New Zealand seamer Tim Southee won the award for Twenty20 International Performance of the Year.  

Pakistan umpire Aleem Dar has won the David Shepherd trophy overcoming five-time winner Simon Taufel, for the Umpire of the Year for the third consecutive time. West Indies women's all-rounder, Stafanie Taylor was named the ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year. ICC announced that the panel is including Ambrose, Davidson, Belinda Clark and the late Frederick Spofforth of Australia into the Hall of Fame on Monday.
